Rolf, I use White pine or Cedar but the most important aspect is the painting technique. I always put on a white primer, use fine steel wool to remove imperfections, Apply exterior outdoor paint, rub fine steel wool after each application when dry and final finish I apply clear poly ( spray can )...

Rolf, you did a fantastic job on that cross, It is much more intricate than the Nativity cross. I will have to order that pattern as well. Thanks for sharing.

Hammer, my woodworking buddies and I do the same thing, we are in the process of making toys for Shriner's children's hospital in Sacramento, California. I think more woodworkers should get involved in such projects as it brings smiles to the faces of these children.
