I'm having a horrible time trying to finish my plywood ornaments.
They're 1/8" and filled with lots of complicated swirls.
What do y'all like to use? Paints, dyes, oils? I just know that the danish oils I normally used just aren't cutting it.

Wow, I wish I had read this thread before I tried ornaments for the first time. Ornament stuck right to the 2x4 chunk I put it on. My dear wife saw my daughter hard at work with a spatula prying it off and just laughed and walked out.

I'm pretty new at this too, and started using the Olson 2/0 blades for the first time today. Pretty amazing accuracy. I haven't tried the gears yet - please let me know how it goes - one beginner to another.

Thank you for the great advice. I've spent a good chunk of time today practicing the tricks you've mentioned on scrap, and it's really paying off. I also secured the scrollsaw to the table a lot better, and increased the lighting, both of which have helped...Leave a comment:

Trouble with scrolling straight lines
After working for weeks on curvy patterns and getting the hang of pivoting and pinpoint turns, I was stymied by the last thing I thought would give me a problem:
Straight lines.
For some reason, my DeWalt just veers off to the right - I would guess by about 10-15 degrees.... -

Not smart enuff for scrolling
Sigh.
So, although my scrolling has been progressing nicely in the past week and a half that I've had my Dewalt, and I've been getting better at those quick turns and nice curves, something's been amiss.
My hands were getting tired from holding the wood in place.
