I made one piece using wide blades, painted the background black, and just glued them on top so it looked kinda like stained glassThat might be pretty effective with spiral blades and thinner wood.

Hey, thanks for all the great advice. I will definitely try both the western red cedar and the cypress. I'm thankful not to have to use treated wood, and if I paint and seal the whole body, it should hold up pretty well, don't you think?

Patio Paver Pals
I'm working on garden stuff this month, and thought those patio paver pals ( Patio Paver Pals )looked pretty fun. I can't seem to find keyhole pavers ANYWHERE, though, not even online, so I reckon I'll make the bodies out of wood. Since they are going outside, should I use treated wood, or is regular...

I just sent in my payment about 10 minutes before I posted this, so poor Judy hasn't had a chance to even see my order yet, lol. I'm going in May, to the beginner's class. I could probably fudge my way through the intermediate but I thought, what the heck, I'll just start from the beginning. ...

Where to stay?
Well, school is letting up a bit, so what am I gonna do? That's right, take another class! Lol. Well, it's a present to myself; I have signed up to take one of Judy Gale Roberts' classes.
I seemed to remember that she recommended a place to stay on her website, but I am darned if I...Last edited by wood-n-things; 03-18-2012, 11:08 AM.

Thanks so muchI was worried about the plastic, but the bubblewrap sounds great, plus that will prevent me dinging the wood, which I have the unfortunate habit of doing when moving it.

Storage
So, I'm getting too many pieces to hang on my walls--I'm trying to get enough backlog to maybe go to a show. How do you guys store your finished intarsia? I live in Florida on a sand road, which means humidity + dust. Would plastic bags be bad? I mostly use gel varnish for a finish.

I'd also like to add Dover books, which often have tons of copyright-free images that you can use.

Jim, if it's as beautiful as the angel inlay you did for your Mom, I'd have to agree. You are way underpriced!

It doesn't really matter what other people would charge, and neither do your costs, really. It's all about the perception of what people think they should pay. For instance, I can do a piece in painted pine, and then in "real wood" and even though the painted one may be way more work, people...

I love your website--I started going through it just last week in factYou have some fabulous stuff.
You might like one thing that I do--I'm forbidden to set my own prices, as I always underprice myself. Instead, a few of my friends who are shopaholics confer and set the prices....

Minwax water-based stains
Anybody used these lately? I used to think they looked pretty bad, but a friend of mine said they were actually pretty good now. I've always used the oil-based but have had to banish all oil products and mineral spirits from my house, alas. Goodbye, dear old red mahogany!

Just FYI, I also like smaller sizes, so I put the patterns on the big board and just rip around them with a number 7 or larger blade in my scroll saw. If you don't particularly need a straight line but just need a smaller size board to scroll, that works OK.
