They actually pick off quite easily. Besides giving my back a welcome respite from the saw (a puzzle this size I cut in quarters so I’ll cut some, then pick off the liner, then cut some more) to me it’s well worth the time in order to maintain the symmetry the grid provides....

Rolf, I don’t use a pattern. I overlay the picture with clear shelf liner and draw a grid on it to keep the rows and columns relatively straight. The locks are then cut freehand....

I could use some help understanding. I bought an Ortur 15w diode engraver a little while ago. Brought it out last week to engrave some blanks to cut at a demonstration later this year. After tweaking the settings to get the burn how I wanted I started engraving. Most of them came out fine, but every...

Scott, veining may work on all woods but not with all patterns. You can see how with this pattern, compared to the one Denny cut, veining wouldn’t work.

Interesting … the reason I asked is that the book of Woodimal patterns I have from Jim Sweet says that "Dotted lines on Woodimal patterns indicate lines for adding optional detail through painting or woodburning. Do not cut along any of the dotted lines."
Obviously Harvey's patterns...

Can’t help you with this one, but if you want something a little different I’ve been making these for years.
They’re especially popular with the younger ones. I’ve got friends whose grandkids ask every year to get it out so they can play with it....

Denny, how do you do the facial details? Are they drawn on, woodburned, or ?

Dave, if you are printing your picture on photo paper make sure to spray it with a clear coat. My experience is that the surface of the paper (if it’s for an inkjet) will start to fall apart if it gets wet (think wet/damp hands handling the pieces)....

If I recall (from many years ago) the PureBond ply does NOT have a ply core but uses some kind of composite material. I much prefer a ply core for puzzle cutting. I’m sure there are other places, but I order my 1/4” poplar ply from Cherry Tree and it has a ply core. It comes in 16”x24” pieces...

Thanx all. I was hoping for something that would seal Baltic birch without coloring it to maintain a contrast with an adjacent piece. With my first try I used BLO to darken the adjacent but it didn’t provide enough contrast so I was thinking Watco with a light tint next to the natural would be my...

Watco
For those of you that have used Watco danish oil, they have various colors + "natural". I was wondering if the natural goes on clear or whether it leaves an amber tint like BLO does....

Understandable for your baskets Betty, but in my experience 1/4” solid wood for puzzles tends to not hold up very well. Especially the small locks....

Betty, so glad that was all it was. We had the misfortune some years back of a student shooting in our high school. The net result was 2 students dead and one in a wheelchair for life. The kid that did the shooting had zero remorse. Even had the audacity to write "killer" on his undershirt...
