You mention that you've had previous turning experience. If that's more than 5-6 years ago, then you probably were using "traditional" (not carbide) tools. Then getting back into it would probably be easier resuming something you already are familiar with.
I haven't noticed a...

Maybe what happened was the wood was talking to, trying to tell you something. Of course you were irritated by the manner in which it tried to communicate - I know I would be much irritated. You couldn't interpret the message through the fog of annoyance.
I think the bowl was saying to...

Another bases-loaded home run! Thank you for sharing, and for the time you devoted to creating and editing the presentation. Truly an eye-opening process.

If you like trains, and in particular if you like steam locomotives, be aware that China still uses steam locos in mainline service. Also, China may have the last remaining manufacturing capability to produce steam engines. If that's your "thing" it would be fantastic to get a tour of one...

If you can find an LED bulb to fit that would the way to go. If not, check out bulbs that are classed as "appliance bulbs" or "rough duty" bulbs. These classes are rated lower wattage the standard incandescents, but longer life, and slightly lower temperature.

I also sorely miss the “Golden Age” writers; Asimov was my favorite. While I never met any professional writers personally, I did have the pleasure of attending a conference in the early 90’s that featured Ray Bradbury as the keynote speaker. The conference was on...

I started reading a book in Nov and I'm about 1/2 way through. I bet you're tempted to say, "Slow reader." No, not particularly slow - I'm on page 6000 of 13710 pages. The book is a Nook book that cost about $2.00. Title is "630 Classic Sci-Fi Short Stories". I've been a sci-fi addict...

I bought one of those about 4 yrs ago. Picked up Fri, returned it Sun.
I couldn't get the blade/table to 90deg on both sides of the blade. Huh? Turned out the table was "A" shaped with the peak at the blade. When I brought it back I checked the display model - same unflat table....

A good point about immunizations that don't last forever. I read in this morning's newspaper (Boston Globe) that there are immunizations that we've forever been told that they last forever, in fact need boosters, eg pertussis (whooping cough). Not a bad idea to review this important topic with your...

I built a cabinetmaker's bench about 20 years ago. If I was to build another today, there is very little I would change. I used the plans from Issue #50 of Woodsmith Magazine. The bench took me 60 hours of part time work (evenings & weekends). The matching cabinet another 40 hours.

I highly recommend viewing the video in this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjgSKrlt7LE.
The presenter shows how to dismantle a DW788, including the replacement of the bearings. He tells what bearings to buy and where (a set of bearings, approx. 11, costs about $20). The video...

At the time I never thought about whether it was inflated, and now several years later thinking back on it I don't know. What is clear is that it bounced from a point close to the front of the car, it had bounced at least once before that, but I can't picture how many more times. As I watched...

I've had three really scary incidents. Two of them were the same circumstances. Late night, entire family in the car on heavily trafficked 4-lane divided highway. The dividers were grassy median strips, and I was in the left lane passing the car to my right, with someone on my tail. I suddenly realized...
