Re: An attaboy for Rick!
Hi-Ho
If there are some specific books you are wanting to read, post it. I would be willing to loan you anything I have. On the other hand we could start a seperate post on carving books and we could list the ones we have available for loan/trade. I have...

Re: Painting supplies
In many of the relief carvings I have done in the past I have used various colors of wood stain on the same carving. This allows the natural wood grain to stand out yet adds character and detail to your carving. This process gives an almost Intarsia look to the finished...

Re: Painting supplies
Thanks for the tips. I did find the following supplier and they have a very good color chart that's worth looking at when planning the paint job.

Painting supplies
This has probably been asked and answered somewhere on the board, but being the lazy person I am, I will ask again instead of searching past posts. As a long time relief carver, I seldom use paints for carving. Since I have expanded my carving adventures to in-the-round,I am faced with the need to buy...

Re: Whittling Knives
I have used many pocket knives over the years, and found as long as you keep it sharp by not using it for cutting 'other things' they all worked pretty good. I recently bought a Kershaw 4380 and had Rick modify it a little and really like it. It has locking blades...

Re: OK bench chisel decision time!!
Dave
I donn't know if you have checked out Nora Hall's site for tools yet, or how they compare in price with others, but I bought mine there because of the way they were prepared.

Re: OK bench chisel decision time!!
Like everyone else I have many different types. My favorite are Stubai. I also have many Lamp brand, and they make a very good tool. The lamp tools come coated to prevent rust, and hold an edge well. I have given my tools a beating and both these brands...

Re: Where can I buy Jelutong Wood
If buying a carving table is your plan then check out the Veritas Carvers Bench at Lee Valley Tools. I received one as a birthday gift this year from my bride, and it is great.

Re: African Mahogany Question
Hi Lindy
I carved a piece of African Mahogany a few years back. It was given to me by a boat builder. The wood has a moderate dulling effect on cutting edges of your tools. Because this wood tears easily you may want to use a reduced cutting angle of...

Re: Ponderosa Pine
Bill
I have carved on the same blank you are talking about. I did a low relief of a logo and it turned out pretty good. Keep your tools sharp an it cuts OK. If your tools get dull the pine tends to rip a bit. It will cup like most woods, so I took my router and...

Re: background texture
Like Hi-Ho, I use a power cover to do most of my background work. The burrs offer a wide choice of potential patterns. The key is to practice on a scrap piece of wood until you find the pattern that fits your carving.

Re: Carving Walnut
Chris - I have carved walnut once before on a relief project, and your right - it is like chipping in stone. I can't imagine trying to carve cain topper out of it unless like Colin said you use power. That being said, what type of wood do most people use for cain/walking...
