Re: Whittling Knives
I carry a warren carving travel set with me. It's about the size of a paper back book has 4 gouges, a v-tool, and 4 blades. all in a hard case.
As for pocket knives i use mine as tools but i do have a couple of Case knives but their not good for carving, too...

Re: Cypress???
Hi Ho,
I havn't found to bad on blades, i just strop a bit more.
When a carving is first done it has a color like dark butter then ages to a nice golden brown tone. The grain is not very visible.

Re: Is Lilac a carving wood
Yeah it's carvable.it's hard . seal the ends like Hi Ho said. Take a wax toilet seal and heat it in a coffe can and dip the ends. It might be easier to power carve on it.

carving live trees
I'm curious can you carve a live tree? If i didn't girdle the trunk all the way around. I'm thinking of carving faces in two oaks that flank my driveway. each is about 24 inches in diameter, my better half wants me to cut them down. I want to keep them, soooo, if i can carve in them maybe she'll want...

The workers said it was brazilian cherry. It has the grain like black cherry but with the open pores like mahogony. its hard as rock. has amyone carved this stuff? it doesn't chip out or splinter. i'm think of just making a mallet out of it instead of carving...

Re: Carving Black Walnut
The sap wood (the white outer wood) carves well also. It just doesn't have the wide color variations like the heart wood. Like the Colin said just seal the ends. Of course you might want to try to carve a small peice while it is still 'green'. You might be surprised...

Re: Carving Black Walnut
Hi Jim,
Alot of lumber mills steam before they dry it so that the sap wood turns brown also. Don't worry about doing it just trim the sap wood off. It carves good too but doesn't have the colors of the heartwood. Like colin said keep your tools sharp it...

Broom Handle
My Youngest daughter came over today and said she wanted a country style broom (with stiff straw for the bristles)with a carved handle. I have a 2inch by 4ft live oak branch I've been saving for a walking stick. It's already debarked and sanded smooth.
I'm open to any suggestions as to what would...

Re: Carving Walnut
I carved two spoon/fork sets out of walnut. It was green. I was picking a load of it up at a lumber mill. They had cut off some of the board ends because of checking and let me have some. It was great to carve. The end grains cut smoothly with no chipping out. And it...
