Re: Too dry Basswood
The experience you describe actually sounds alot like when I tried to carve cotton wood, it was the same way and I threw it out before I finished. I have not experienced basswood ever getting really light. Air dried usually seems lighter than kiln dried, but neither...

Re: Jelutong wood
It helps if you tell where you are from, so people from your area can direct you accordingly. I would say that an internet purchase of such a piece of wood would come with a hefty shipping tag, so I would first look for a local (or semi local) company first....

Re: wood
I would go with yellow pine if you need strength, alittle more weight but not much.

Aspen anyone?
I have started a carving in aspen for the first time, and I'm wondering why this isn't a more commonly spoke of carving medium. It is a bit soft, so you have to use sharp tools to keep it from tearing, but no more than tupelo or basswood. So, if you find yourself deciding, try some aspen. Or if you...

Re: Weecher
I gotta agree with Callynne about the Proxxon tools. I would buy their tools over many others. I dont know about their micromotors, but their sanders and grinders rule!

If I wanted to 'Flense,' how would I go about it? Does it have to do with dental care?...

Re: Masonite use, outdoors
Sure you can. I am currently working on some outdoor sculpture, (not wood) and Im coating it with a polyester epoxy resin, then auto style paint. The resin is what you coat fiberglass with, and is very durable.

Re: Lettering with computer true-type fonts
Ihave done two name plaques, I used Helenistic on one, and Tahoma on the other. I did it primitively. I printed out the name, used spray adhesive to apply it to the wood, then routed the letters out. I then finished it up with chisels for that...

How sweet you are giving him a self portrait openerI thought about a self portrait carving but it's depressing how large the wood would have to be. :P

Re: How do you finish your carvings?
