I have used Johnson Paste floor wax with success. Several coats allowing drying time and buffing in between. The little bride dosen't like the smell of BLO so,,,,,

Seen a couple of pieces of curly basswood at WoodCrafters in Tusla a couple of months back but they were over priced on their basswood. Did pick up a nice piece of tupelo and butternut. Still over priced.

Re: sharpening
Isn't 3400 RPM a little fast for sharpining or stropping a knife or tools. I would think a lower RPM would be best on the tool and the Carver. May ne wrong on this but at 3400 RPMs, one would have to be awlfull carefull in not burning the blade.

Rick, Those I know that have them in SEK uses coke. One has started wearing a respierator due to the Fumes. I guess if you blacksmith much the fumes would be harmfull. Enjoy watching. Had a couple of cooking items forged from one for camping. Still have the tripod for holding...

I have found both the northern Cottonwood bark and the locally(kansas) to carve nicely. Both were thick and nither one thicker than the other. Ranges in thickness on both has been up to 7 to 8 inches thick and wide equally as much. Both are hard to carve...

Carbide and steel burrs and worls well on diamond ruby and sapphire stones. Actually, a host of tools it works on.

Wll, I just came into a lot of the Plain Cottonwood bark. And I do mean a lot. I wasn't sure the procedure to clean it. Had some bugs which in some but after spreading some of the bark out, have not seen any. What I have is a Pickup bed full of Plains Cottonwood....
