What do you recommend for the oil finish, Linseed oil, tung oil ?
If I wanted to apply some paint or color to an area of the carving, do you apply the oil finish first and then an oil paint wash? What is the order of applying the various finishes?...

You suggest sealing the ends of the 8 foot log and then splitting it. Would I need to seal the new edges also?

The Walnut arrived today. I assume the black center is the heartwood and with a 10' log there is about 3-4' of the heartwood.
Should I just remove the sapwood (light tan color) or will the sapwood also darken with age to some extent? Is the sapwood...Leave a comment:

I think this is considered a hard wood, correct?
I have mostly worked with bass wood, pine and poplar. Currently I have my tools sharpened to about a 15* angle, would I need to rework some bevels to more like 25*?

A friend of mine is cutting down a black walnut tree and he offered the wood to me.
Has anyone carved black walnut?

I agree with Big Al, I like to finish one carving before going on to the next project. It seems like everthing that I do, I jump from one project to the next without completing something.

I also use yellowstone and I tried the yellow bar from flex cut but it seems too oily or greasy and it hard to get it off your hands or clothes. You can tell I really get into stropping.
