Thanks again, Jim & Jim for bringing this cause to our attention and taking the lead on this!!
Hmmm, I wonder what other causes exist that would tug at the heartstrings enough to open the wallets of this amazing group of humans.

Jim -- from their diary, they hiked down the Tanner trail with 25 pound packs and with a pack mule. They left the mule and some supplies at the old Beamer cabin (the ruins are still there) and hiked about 15 miles upstream with their cameras and a supply of glass plates. It is hard to imagine carrying...

Thanks for the comments. As you know, I love being down in the big ditch and doing the work I do there.
Walter -- Hope you can make it west and take a peek for yourself.
Carl -- I love wild spaces -- makes me feel small and in awe of my surroundings.
Bill --...

Years ago, I was driving along at about 60 or so when a V8 block fell out of a pickup in front of me. I managed to swerve around it and lived to drive another day.
On a lighter note, I worked changing tires for a while while in college. One day, a contractor came in with a pickup loaded...

Then & now in the Little Colorado River
Around 1908, the Kolb brothers, Emery & Ellsworth, hiked up the Little Colorado River taking pictures. These pictures are now in a special collection at the Kline library at Northern Arizona University. We, mostly Mike (a co-worker) have tried to replicate these photos to see the differences in...Last edited by mtnman; 11-12-2013, 11:30 PM.

mtnman replied to ***Blade donations for disadvantaged scrollers - closing date for posting - 8 Nov***in Off TopicJim & Jim -- THANKS for taking the lead on this. It is nice to be able to assist in a good cause. Is there other equipment or supplies that we might be able to get across the border to support this cause?

WOW!!! Having a mentally handicapped son, I can imagine the self-worth and self-image boost from being a part of this workshop.
How can we provide some supplies/tools/support for this project? Can I order blades and have them shipped to them? This project is close to home for me and...

Tim, I used an older version of the one pictured below where possible. Then, using the pin inserts, I marked the mating piece and drilled it on the drill press. I'd generally mark the first hole, drill it and fit it with a short dowel to mark the next hole. That makes the marks more accurate. Accuracy...

mirror finish on MDF -- a link
I was thinking of a grand piano type finish on cheap "wood" and ran across this link. I've done some automotive painting but had never thought of using those techniques on wood.
Here is the link with a step by step process.
How to paint MDF to a mirror finish...

Jan -- It is great that you managed to break out of the big house. The shop is therapeutic.
Jim -- it does seem a bit strange that a person gets up from sitting long enough to build a chair. With the number of exposed end grains, quarter-sawn wood would be a good choice. Can't wait to...

I'm going with a wipe-on poly finish. The "natural" color finish really looks nice on the alder -- at least on my test pieces.
Mike -- Thanks! It is good to spend more time in the shop and less at the doctor.
I did this with a left-sided arm rest. I...
