what tickness of wood are you starting to take the cup or warp out
when buy wood at the lunber yard look to see if it is flat or vertical
vertical tends to have less warp and cup also look to see where the knots are

alder according to the hardwood producer is a wood with a thousand faces and will take about any finish
if you see some alder at the lumber store thar has stain the wood was not milled with in six from the time that it was harvested
please wear a mask while cutting...

to answer one of the questions about cedar is on side is left rough for a rough look when used on siding for buildings. there are several types of cedar western red cedar alaskan cedar here on the west coast

just ordered a new w788 any thing that is odd that might my dermel went on strike

go down to an industrial supply store and take your old bearing with you it might cost a nichel more but if it don't normally they will take it back

i have a craftsman stool that is adjustable and has a back idon't try and saw over a half an hour then take a break aa nd let the eyes rest awhile and go at it again

I understand you are just starting to scroll saw and are on a tight budget I started the same way.
first question to ask your self what type of scroll work are you looking at doing. that will help you determine part of the tools you will use
then go from there

call dremal customer service and they have parts i just recived the part you are looking for plus are to set tention if you have a problem the tech will help you out

drill bits that are small will wander if you get in a hurry take your time and use high quailty bit they may cost more but will track true do you have an industrial supply store close by? i use an aul to make a small dent in the wood the bit then has an indent to start in

the craftman that was on the floor was a hobbie saw and when the sale person was ask about a craftsman pro whats that
