    Re: Refinishing a carving

Donna, if it was me I think I'd try using denatured alcohol, putting some on a Q-tip and gently wiping at the face area. I used it years ago on some woodwork that I didn't want to actually strip, just to clean it up and it worked great. At that time I used...

    Re: Cottonwood Bark!

Okay, bark carving is definitely on my 'to do' list for next year, I've got myself too committed (or perhaps I SHOULD be committed! ) this year. Things are starting to get very busy, I'm getting braver and have started taking orders , scary but exciting!...

Re: How long should my knife blade be?

So far the longest knife I have used is 1 1/2', seems plenty long enough for my carvings, which are up to twelve inches tall. I prefer the one that is 1 1/8' long, Dave Lyons brand, of course! Callynne

    Re: Detail Knives

My two cents worth, I have a couple different brand knives...which do I use?? Only the Dave Lyons brand! I love those knives, I have the 1 1/8' regular one and two little detail knives. They are all wonderful, hold a very sharp edge with just stropping and even with...

Hmmm, maybe this is one of the good things about starting to carve this late in life. I have finished every piece I've started! The housework on the other hand..... Callynne

    Re: Wecheer flex drive

Hi Steve, I'm wondering from your post if perhaps you mean the rotary Wecheer instead of the reciprocating one since you are talking about doing lettering on a walking stick.
I have the Proxxon reciprocating carver and I love it. It is perfect for roughing...

    Re: sawing blanks

Jamesfa, I just start cutting too. Some times a little bit too close to the pattern :'(. I cut out one or the other, front or side, then draw in the opposite of what I've cut and try to get rid of a little bit more waste wood. I agree with Donna T, when I'm doing...

Carmen, I tend to agree with the last couple posts also. If you want to try that wolf, go for it. Charlotte and Curtis are correct, you never do know what talent might be hidden in you waiting to come out. If nothing else it will definitely be a learning experience....

    Re: Bad Basswood

Hey guys, I'm glad I read this post, even though I haven't had any bad basswood, just pieces that carve a little harder than others but the detail always seems to work out well. Of course, starting carving on the end of 2x4's does make all basswood seem wonderful by...

    Re: Gluing basswood for carving

Brad, I was very nervous when I learned about glue ups, I thought everything should be made from a solid piece of wood. Like, of course, that is possible!!
I use Titebond II, I've been told my pieces would break anywhere but where they are glued...

    Re: Aspen anyone?

I don't know about aspen but I sure found out how much nicer basswood is than pine over the weekend. As I've mentioned before, when I started carving I used the ends of 2x4's, that's all I could find at first. Finally found basswood and have used just it since.....until...
