    Colin, seeing the way you can incorporate the knots, splits and other defects of a piece of wood into your design I knew you had to have a reason for not giving them hair, I didn't expect it to be embarassment. :-[ LOL

    Surfing the web last week and came across a wood called Paulownia. The site I was on was touting it as better than balsa for strength to weight ratio. Try http://www.paulowniawood.com/ and it will give you all the info . Claims to be carveable but I have never tried it.

    Another hard but beautiful natural finish wood is apple . I carved some bookmarks and letteropeners from the wood of an old tree and just oiled them and the colour and grain were outstanding. Don

    And it doesn't rust so any residue that you miss before you put on that first coat of water based finish doesn't leave rust spots you can't get rid of.

    In the resturant trade there are msds for dish soap,cooking oil and probably water.Nothing is safe if you don't use it right.
