    I really like your little birds. It is a great idea to stack cut them and end up with multiple birds. I agree with Scott, I would sell them for $15 especially since you are cutting them from hard woods.

    For Fretwork, I use Inkscape. It is a free vector software that allows you to put a photo on a lower level and then draw over it. It does have a learning curve, but I know that there is some great demos that members of this forum created and shared with us....
