  • Wood lampshade

    Hello scrollsaw pro ! dataurl647914.png
After my garden flowers season , I will have that interesting project !
I have a ceramic lamp that my mother at the age of 17 in 1927, had painted at her school with the nuns , and I would like to make a wood lamp-shade , on my scrollsaw.

    dataurl647918.jpg

Birds and flowers will be most of the patterns as the lamp, and as you see I will make it octogonal . The actual lamp-shade in stained glass was made by my sister, which is beautiful but I want to try a wood version!
The actual lamp-shade (glass part ) is 10 " hight, and 15 ” in dia. at the largest point at base. The rod supporting the lamp-shade, and the top plate over the ceramic lamp are in brass, that I has just cleaned. The top round plate is 4”, and has to be there for supporting the lamp-shade.

    dataurl647919.jpg
I want that we see more the brass plate than presently , with a shorter lamp-shade )

I made a test in paper to see the shape , which is smaller at 10” at the base and 8 “ hight and 4” at the top . And I would also bend the shade at 3/4 near the top , to have smaller top than 4" , but my drawing is not yet finished, still thinking about it.

    dataurl647920.jpg
With the lamp colors and patterns, what would be your suggestions for the wood, or others patterns. I was thinking of a bit of ebony , mixed with others woods.
Do you have, some ideas, sites, for a lamp-shade of that kind .

I saw some on the web. and I tried to reach one of them with no result.🙁

    dataurl647922.jpg dataurl647923.jpg

So I would appreciate very much your advises or plans sites and thank you in advance!

There is, was, a guy in Bruce’s woodworking club that does mostly lampshades. If he’s still there, I’ll get his contact info for you.

What a family treasure you have!

For detailed (beautiful) work like this I like Cherry. To do some beveled inlays with other woods would be VERY interesting.

I began to cut my 8 pieces of wood , without knowing yet how I will do the top part of each 8 pieces.

As on the photo, will it be straigh as on the actual shade in stained glass

            IMG_2866(2).thumb.JPG.b77e0e3f4541f158ade11bdfc740123d.JPG

            IMG_1701(2).thumb.JPG.bceb5aa135e61c9d3e381138423d92e6.JPG

or the final 2" with an angle ???? This way will be lot more difficult , with the cutting at an different angle than the buttom part.

            IMG_3256(2).thumb.JPG.91ef2998b08eb1983a8b9ef0dc098383.JPG

So what are your suggestions or ideas ?

Those pieces will be around 1/8" thick or more. First cuts today from a big piece of cherry, left from my rocking chair.

            IMG_3252(2).thumb.JPG.9698fb8247b449bb5f92669739dffdf8.JPG

            IMG_3255(2).thumb.JPG.02f01996f20ce25df92952a7f7e5e6ea.JPG

I had cut the 8 pieces of the shade , in cherry ,
            IMG_3262.thumb.JPG.60bbedbb90281d334f18437f40b272fc.JPG

And to cut them with the right angle, I have to used an angle piece

            IMG_3258.thumb.JPG.37fb26944ebf56c55f59adc1936b5ba3.JPG

And cut at the right lengh

            IMG_3261.thumb.JPG.fced5806d972d9e54670cb5809b8d6e1.JPG

and did some tests to cut those 8 pieces at the 67.5° on each side, for fixing them together.

            IMG_3266.thumb.JPG.fba3679b8b65ba80becfb47df218217b.JPG

Question : would you have an easy way to glue these 8 pieces together to make the octagon ?

I would think that I will have to make a support so the 2 parts to be glued are well supported! But before gluing, I will have to cut at the scroolsaw the patterns !
I know we can use tape around the 8 pieces once finish,so we will see once ready !

Like it very much, good challenge !

              Another step ...

So I cut the 8 pieces at the right assembly angle 67.5°, was not so easy cutting each side at the miter saw ,had to be very carefull because of the thin thickness of the wood, and special adjusment for both side angle.

              IMG_3265.jpg

With the 8 pieces assemble like that, I will draw the patterns

              IMG_3268.jpg

and..... tadam ...... first look of what it is going to look

              IMG_3271.jpg

And probably I will use this tape when it will be glue time , what do you think ?

              IMG_3272.jpg

              Very happy till today!

Now I have to decide what are the patterns I will put on it, looking partialy as my Mother did on the base in 1930 😲 😁 Will be as this one

If you have some ideas I am interested !

                    Need your advise ....😉
How would you do to hold the center part of the birds , once I cut it from one of the 8 parts. I want to cut only the thickness of the blade.
I tought putting a small piece of plexiglass glue behind .
What do think about it ?
                    You have surely others ideas....😉

First test of cutting and light behind....

                      without light

                      IMG_3274.jpg

                      with light

                      IMG_3275.jpg

so completed cutting around the bird and flower would need something at the back.
I could cut a larger stroke to be more visible, or it is OK.
And I will also add some flowers and patterns , so the light may be more visible.

                      What do you think ....😉

I like what you have done. I look forward to seeing the final project. What are you using to diffuse the light in the clear areas?
I would add a bit more to the right of the bird so that the lighted area is more centered on the panel.

I asked Bruce about the guy in his woodworking group and he hasn’t been there for quite awhile. I didn’t want you to think I forgot about it. This looks amazing.

It looks good, however it's different than how I thought you were going to cut it. I thought you might be cutting them as silhouettes with attachments on the outside border which would be about 1/4". This would emulate the existing shade.

Underneath the cutout you could apply frosted plexiglass to diffuse the light. ("frosted" would be achieved by sanding 1/8" plexiglass with a palm sander.) You could still use frosted plexiglass beneath what you are doing to diffuse the light.

And Karl , if you mean adding some intarsia patterns, I did tought about that idea.
