Getting cartoon characters on wood

Hi, what would be the best way to get cartoon characters, animal faces, colorful print designs etc on wood? An example has been attached.

I make puzzles out of Christmas cards and it is a similar application. If you have the colored image on paper or liked material I would spray the back of the paper and the wood with a spray adhesive like 3M Super 77 and carefully apply. Works best if the wood is slightly oversized and you trim the excess after the picture is applied.
