  • Finish on Aspen

I am about to put finish on an intarsia project that has a lot of aspen. I used aspen because I needed a very white wood. Has anyone worked with aspen and can recommend a finish that won't affect the color and offer some UV protection?

Hi Scott - generally I use a Miniwax water based polyacrylic finish which I can source locally. You might also check out this link for other products which are more readily available in the US- Theres a little bit of nonsense in the thread but also some decent info.

I also use Polycrylic water based when I need a wood not to get the yellowish brown tint the urethanes give.

Add me to the list of people who use Minwax Water-based Polycrylic for aspen. When I made some live edge bowls from aspen, it was the only finish that kept the wood as close to white as possible, and with no blotching.

WOW. Three out of three in a world where no one seems to agree on anything. How could I go wrong?

Used a 788 for many years. It now resides with a crafty family friend.

Welcome! John! From Reno NV. A long time 788 user (I'm94) I'm sure you will get many happy hours from the repairs you placed on the machine.

I'm 74, retired from the commercial dimensional advertising world. (carved and routed signs).
I've always used the Roto-Zip, band saw, or other tools to make my projects. (wishing many times I had a good scroll saw). Well, I finally found an old DW-788 that the original owner said "it finally...

I use acrylic paint mixed with water to stain when I want vibrant colors. There was an article in one of the issues awhile back where a product called "Unicorn Spit" was suggested for the colors---and many people swear by it....

Oh my gosh Betty....Your son is fortunate to be alive. How badly stung was he by the hornets? Electrical shock is crazy dangerous. Wow.
