I am carving greenwood. Can I be able to stain and finish while it is curing?

My Opinion.. Yes and No ???
I have a walking stick I turned while green and finished with poly over 30 years ago and it looks great, never cracked.
But I have carved some green wood and finished it the same way and it cracked the next day. I guess it depends on the wood ! I would say to go ahead and carve the piece and let it dry for a while then fill any cracks and then finsh it !
