  • Trivet Finish

To all of my fellow scrollers that makes trivets - which I have never done until now - please share what is the best way to finish a trivet that you plan on using for hot pots. I've cut some trivets for gifts, but not sure how is the best to finish them. Thank you for any advice you can share!!

I cut one from white oak. I let it soak in mineral oil for longer than I should have but it turned out great.

I don't put anything on mine, just because I don't know how a finish will react to a hot pan.

Mineral oil works for me. When the trivit starts to look bad just add a new coat.

I soak mine in mineral oil, let drip dry, then buff with a brown paper bag. Have one on the table that has been used for several years with no problems.

I sincerely appreciate the responses from everyone - thank you. It looks like mineral oil is the most preferred method. I'll post some pictures when I complete them.

Bob, I have cut hundreds of trivets and always use either mineral oil or 100% Tung oil. Have never had a problem with them. I also buff them with either a buffing wheel or paper bag.

I use gloss poly as my finish on trivets and have had no problems with it.

When I was making Trivets years ago, I had some problems when using the gloss poly finish....a very hot pot would heat up the Poly and leave a white ring. Haven't tried it since. As for using lemon oil, I have not tried that, but it should work.

I finish all of my trivets in Danish Oil. Haven't had any problems or complaints and it holds up to the heat of a pot just fine.
