  • Oil over acrylic paint?

I want to use an oil over acrylic paint. Is this an option and if so, what oil is best? It will be used on toys so must be food-/childsafe.

I want to get rid of brushes (can't get a smooth finish) and I would like to avoid spraying. I am experimenting with thinned acrylic paint which can be applied with a rag and looks like a stain with a lot of grain showing what is exactly the look I want. I want to apply an oil to get a durable finish and want to know what will work best.

    Thanks,

    Bob

Bob, any oil product you use will turn the project yellow or amber. Modern finishes are all food/childsafe once cured. I would try whatever you decide on, on a scrap piece first.

First off, I suggest reading this thread about the CPSC ruling regarding children's toys. You can decide for yourself if it affects you.

Now, as for oils, they will impart a yellow or amber tint to the painted colors. This may not be desireable to you. Waterborne finishes, such as Sherwin Williams waterborne polyurethane varnish, will remain clear and not affect the color underneath it. Regarding child safe finishes, all finishing products, currently available to consumers in the USA, are non-toxic, once cured.

I am lucky that SPSC ruling does not apply to me since I live in the Netherlands. Since oil will give an colored tint I will try some diluted clear on waterbase.

        Thanks,
