Painting Chess sets

Hi everyone. I was just wondering what type of paints people use on there work. I am currently making a chess set for some children so it needs to be child safe and i would also like to know the best way to apply the paint so there are no lines or bumps. Any advice would be greatly appriciated

Well the best way to avoid bumps is to spray it. All paints sold in the united states today unless imported from china is child safe after it cures. I prefer water soluble paints for children's items though. Why paint it, use contrasting wood stains, you can dip those.

I need to paint as used really cheap wood which doesnt have a nice look to it. Originally i was just doing it as a test to see how well i could cut the pieces out as it was my first time. I was very pleased with myself and cut out far too many pieces to stop and restart using some decent stock

Looking forward to some pics....Don't be shy we live for others pics. I'd use watered down/thinned (with water) acrylics and a brush then.

I will give it a try. The link in my signature goes directly to the only image i have of it so far. I have sprayed a few of the pieces but close up it doesnt look that nice which is why im looking into othe options.

You did make another 8 pawns didn't you? Who is the designer of that set? I especially like the king & queen design. Please do post photos when you get them all cut and painted.

love the work and the design...looks like you used pine from the grain design..may be a bit rough if you used stain because of the grain...might try dipping with a ( slightly ) watered down acrylic.....should cover nicely. (although the grain pattern looks good also.........)

Titch the problem you are having posting is the signature line may be upsetting our spam arrestor. Use the full reply mode and you should be fine.

Some members with dial up are hesitant about going to off forum sites to view pics.

Just a tip...

Here is the preferred way to post photos. This method will apply a thumbnail so that messages load faster, keeping those who are still on dial up in mind.

If it is a new thread scroll down below the message box to additional options and look for manage attachments,Click on Manage Attachments, click Browse, find your file name on your computer, click it, then click Upload. It may take a few seconds to load.
Once you see the file name under current attachments you can close the window.
If you want you can Preview Post (a wise choice) then if all is well, click on Submit reply.

I think you are right about the signature. I dont think it was doing that before i added it. Thanks for the tips on the adding of photos. I will try it next time.

Staining them them a really dark colour is not a bad plan as i am not the biggest fan of painting either
