The food color and clothing dye are water based which is going to raise the grain, you might want to look at the aniline dye which is alcohol based. I would use clear lacquer for the finish.

Any clear protecting finish will work with dye or food coloring. Oil based finishes will darken or yellow the color. Water based finishes would probably work best.

Thank you Everyone for your advice. I bought a Dewalt. Eugene I also had the same experience with the craftsman. I have only had time to cut a couple pieces of my project. But so far I love it an can see a big difference also alot quiter
