  • Help with BLO finish

The other day I'm finishing a project with blo. Hang it up to let it start drying with the intentions of coming back later in the day to wipe down the residue. Well, later in the day turned into 2 1/2 days later. My fears were well founded. All along the bottom was dry/ semi-dry droplets. Wiping down only left what looked like water spots. Tried sanding, but wasn't happy with the results. Then I had the idea to use the felt polishing wheel on the Dremel. Worked like a charm! Wont make a practice of doing that, but it was a very satisfying fix.

Something I will file away for future use - I am sure I will do the same thing - just not getting back to it.

    Thanks for the tip.

        Kevin,
I am glad your project is ok. I had the same problem with the BLO leaving spots on my project. I used Mineral Spirits and wiped down the wood until the spots went away ,then I had to continue wiping until the Mineral Spirits dried, and the project turned out ok. The next time I used BLO I wiped down the project off and on for several hours until the wood was not wet anymore and it came out looking ok.

When I do a BLO finish, I alway allow it to dry for at least 7 days before applying a finishing coat. DNA or mineral spirits works pretty well for me.

To get a really nice BLO finish use real turpentine as a solvent. Hand rubbed BLO finishes are some of the most beautiful and durable finishes there are. It is not like sprays or brushed on finishes, it soaks into the grain and is very water repellant. It takes a lot of elbow grease but it is worth it. The A New Day Abstract Challenge I cut is hand rubbed BLO.

It gives the wood a warm look that has depth and feels like silk............smooth.

I tried BLO once and was disappointed. I went back to Watco which I know what the results will be like.

He did the Baltimore run in October and finished in a little over 10 minutes. Of course it’s a very hilly course here and flat in San Antonio. Very proud of all of them.

Its a marathon not a dance. My 14 year old grandson ran a 8:50 mile in the 10k and finished 150 out of 1550 runners! My 12 year old granddaughter ran a 11:16 mile and came in 661 out of 1600 runners. Beat her mother by 100th of a second! I’m sure Sarah let her cross the line first. Tomorrow is the...

I must apologize to everyone on the list. I'm afraid my ornaments will be late. Thursday afternoon, Connie got checked into the hospital with congestive heart failure. Between that and her alzheimers, it has been an interesting couple of days. Once she is released from the hospital, she will go to an...
