  • more free wood

Somedays we are blessed even more than others.
I bumped into an old boss of mine that I hadn't seen for years.
We talked about the new things in our lives and I mentioned scrolling.
He had been doing renovations, and is now retired. His son in-law does hardwood floors, and there are tons of offcuts.
    Walnut, oak, maple oh my.

Well he needed to get ridd of quite a lot and I happened to be there at the right time.
I will have to run the back through the thickness planer to remove the ridges, but it is wonderful wood. I left a business card incase they have to "Get rid" of more.

Congratulations Carl on the free wood. Isn't free wood just great ? Sounds like a nice stash you got there. I was never lucky enough to get much free wood for scrolling but since I have added turning as yet another one of my hobbies I am getting more free wood than I will ever be able to use . Mostly in log or firewood size pieces so if some splits or cracks I still have it as an extra bonus of more firewood.
      Can't beat free.

        Carl

did i ever tell you that we are actually related.

Seems we have a common ancestor.
Back in the 1220, I had uncle named Antonio, who married your great, great, (add 9 more times) grandmother’s maid’s cousins next door neighbor on her fathers side.
So were practically brothers. Just thought id share this incase your putting your… ah….our family on the list to give out free stuff, like wood.

Congratulations Carl! I'd say what goes around comes around

We all have many little blessings every day such as

THE CLOTHES THAT FIT A LITTLE TOO SNUG
          BECAUSE IT MEANS
          I HAVE ENOUGH TO EAT.

FOR A LAWN THAT NEEDS MOWING,
          WINDOWS THAT NEED CLEANING,
          AND GUTTERS THAT NEED FIXING
BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE A HOME.

          FOR ALL THE COMPLAINING
          I HEAR ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT
          BECAUSE IT MEANS
          I HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH..

          FOR THE PARKING SPOT
I FIND AT THE FAR END OF THE PARKING LOT
BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM CAPABLE OF WALKING
AND I HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH TRANSPORTATION.

          FOR MY HUGE HEATING BILL
          BECAUSE IT MEANS
          I AM WARM.

FOR THE LADY BEHIND ME IN CHURCH
WHO SINGS OFF KEY BECAUSE IT MEANS
          I CAN HEAR.

FOR THE PILE OF LAUNDRY AND IRONING
          BECAUSE IT MEANS
          I HAVE CLOTHES TO WEAR.

          FOR WEARINESS AND ACHING MUSCLES
AT THE END OF THE DAY
BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE BEEN
          CAPABLE OF WORKING HARD.

FOR THE ALARM THAT GOES OFF
          IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS
BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM ALIVE.

AND FINALLY, FOR TOO MUCH E-MAIL
          BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE
FRIENDS WHO ARE THINKING OF ME.

I'm sure you"ll put it all to good use!

Carl If Pete says your family I think we are neighbors your like next door to me BC to Montreal! LOL,
A great source for free wood but you need to be very careful before running it in the planner or jointer is found in the car dealership dumpster. 90 % of the stuff comes in creates or skids of 7 or so feet long and anywhere between 1/4 of and inch to 1 1/14 inch thick. Depending on what they get will depend on the wood. When I was teaching the kids at work September 2005 to June 2006 how to do wood working and using a scroll saw as a means to provide them their individual counseling I become good friends with the guy at the auto parts reception for his free wood. My boss loved that saved her subject for wood. There was more wood I could handle and what a shame to see it all go in the garbage what I could not use. He loved it too as it saved him time from smashing them up to put them in the dumpster. Loads of pine and spruce. Then I went to the car dealership dumpster behind my office and found loads of maple wood. I've also found birch, and oak for free. Another good place is the local shipping yards of trucking company and depending where the shipments are from you can get lucky on your catch of the day. Another place is cabinet shop they have all kinds of run off and BB ply wood. One of my neighbors owns a cabinet shop and he stated he would bring me some cut off and BB plywood some day instead of putting it in the dumpster can't wait.

Good luck on your quest for free wood.

                Eric

                  Way to go Carl,
That's where I get most of my scraps as I to own a hardwood flooring business ( done it for 24 years). Tough on body but decent perks. Starting a 5" Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba) floor tomorrow. 2300 square feet. Already eyed a few boards that won't make it to to floor.

Bill, I love your post. I do think we all probably complain a little too much. I am going to print that and maybe even read at Thanksgiving time. We do have much to be thankful for.
