  • Carving fruits and vegetables

??? What ever happened to the thread about carving fruits and vegetables...and hard boiled eggs? What is the wierdest material you ever tried to carve? Can you rate it on the hobo scale? I tried to carve a cattail once. Worked out pretty good until I tried to de-fuzz it....hehehe

The only fruit I have carved are apples. For those who haven't tried it's just a matter of carving a face on the peeled apple and setting it aside to dry. It's kind of fun and the end result is always a surprise because it's nothing like the original carving. Hey Capt'n, at the risk of sounding stupid, what the heck is a 'hobo scale'?

Ahhh...I see you do not have a subscription to Wood Carving Illustrated, our gracious host for this site. In each issue of WCI, a different variety of wood is discussed and its' merit as a good carving medium is rated from one to four 'hobos'. The hobo is a small carved caricature who's origins are best explained by the Editor of WCI. Get a subscription!

I recently attended a show in Sheboygan Falls, WI where a lady had a bunch of carved sweet potatoes! She peels them, carves them like Santa's and dries them in a food dehydrator. She said drying them in an oven or microwave did not work and air drying them just left a green, fuzzy mess. She also said that you had to carve the eyes and nose larger than ususl because they shrunk so much. They looked pretty cool when they were finished.

My wife carves fruit quite often and it turns out great; we call it fruit salad! OK, so that doesn't help much, just couldn't pass itup.

Must be nice to live where a newsstand will carry ANY kind of carving magazine. The only newsstand near me hires school kids to run it and when you ask for a carving magazine they just say HUH??????????????????????????????????
