  • HELP! Broke Saw, Going into Withdrawal

I need some constructive input (besides "buy a new saw"). I'll get to my question after I finish whinning about it. Actually I hoping my venting will provide sufficient info for some helpful responses. Now...let the whinning begin...

My Craftsman, 16" VS has started vibrating. It's about a 4.8 on the Richter Scale! I looked under the hood and noticed some fiber/rubber washers on the lower arm have deteriated and fallen out of position. Their position is a little hard to describe but I'll try (no exploded parts view available).

Coming off the motor shaft is a 'cam' of sorts with a vertical piece (VP) that results in the up/down motion. At the top of this vertical piece is where it is bolted to the lower arm. The upper part of the VP has a U-type channel that the lower arm sits in and is where the bushings are (were) located. Also, the holes for the bolt look enlarged but I think a steel washer will correct that.

I was in the midst of cutting a butterfly pattern (by Sue Mae) for a client who asked for 25 cuttings. I had cut 16 last week when the problem wasn't evidient. Today I was planning to finish the project when the problem reared its ugly head.

In order to continue cutting, I did install two rubber faucet washers hoping it would help. It did, but only marginally. I managed to get 4 more cut but will attempt no more until I get my dilema resolved. It's too hard to control the blank and the blade is wandering during the cut.

    Whinning segment over...

    So, several questions:

    1. Does it sound like the bushings is the whole problem? I'm not entirely sure it is.
    2. Has anyone with this saw experienced the same problem?
    3. If yes, how did you fix it?

I'm going to see if parts are available but the saw is about 5 or 6 years old. With the economy the way it is, I'll have a hard time justifying a new saw. Especially if I opt to upgrade to a DeWalt or something in a higher caliber of saw.

No experience with that saw. I have had too many issues over the years with Craftsman power tools. I would thing the bushing started the issues but once the bushing failed you may have developed other issues like the over sized hole.

My $0.02 is since you have orders I would jump on Craigslist and look for a spare machine. Never hurts to have a back up.

I agree with Scott...you might just find a great deal on a used saw in great condition to use as a back up. I have two Hegners and a Porter Cable...Hegners are for my use and the Porter Cable is used to teach friends that want to learn....I think I picked it up for under $100

        Mike,
        What is the model #?
I will assume that you went through the entire mechanicals and made sure that al set screws are tight and that the cam (actually a counterweight) is tight and properly located. My Delta 16" started to vibrate like crazy and I found a bunch of loose things. A few drops of locktight and realignment fixed it all, better than new.
And of course I would suggest you take some of your profits and stash them away for a future saw upgrade.

good morning, mike. i had the same saw and the SAME problem a couple of years back. i replaced it with a Big Yeller Saw and haven't looked back. i could NOT believe the difference. i'd recommend getting the Dewalt (they won't get any cheaper) and be amazed. you'll even notice you do better work on a better saw (who'd a' thunk it :-). be goooood to yourself!

Model # is 137.216100. I found my manual with the parts listing. I also found it at Sears Parts on-line. But the on-line pic (cropped and attached) is a really bad image and my manual lists at least one part that looks like if may be a bushing or washer. This part is the one circle in the pic. I can buy part #31 for a few bucks but not sure what good it will do without the other, unlisted part. Although my manual identifies the circled part with a part reference, it is not listed on the manual's parts list. I may have to buy the lower arm, too, but it's only $15.

In looking at the on-line image again. it looks like #30A is the entire assembly. In the manual it's listed as 0ZWG which matches the on-line description. Here's the Sears link. If you have time, look at it and tell me if you think that part includes all the smaller parts. I'll email Sears and ask the same question but not sure what kind of response I'll get.

I will definitely be looking for a new saw but that purchase will have to wait.

Thanks for all the input, gang.

Great Mike but I would still be scanning Craigslist for a better or backup saw. Heck in July I found a brand new Dewalt 788 Model 1 on Craigslist for $125.00.

Well, if I had the money I'd be getting a new saw. But I don't at the moment so a repair is necessary.

Speaking of which, I got the parts in (about $50 total) and made the repair today. Which is good timing as I just got an order from a new client. So I'll be putting my repair to the test soon. (More $$ to put away for a new saw!)

While I was making the repair I made a few improvement to my saw stand. Awhile back I banged my knee on a sharp corner on the wooden platform. The knew was sore for a week! So while the saw was off of it I got a coping saw and rounded the front corners (I sit while sawing). Also, I took an old mouse pad which is about 1/4" thick and secured them under the saw to obsorbe a little more of the vibration.

Can't wait to make some sawdust!

I have 2 Ryobi 16" scroll saws. 1 I bought for $75 off craigslist and the other I bought brand new from HD for $120. The new one I was using during a thunder storm and the lights flickered and went out. After the storm and the electric came back on I went back to saw some more and the motor was acting funny, like it was trying to turn but was having truble. So I got the old one back out. Well, the other day I had the 2 birthday projects to do and the tension assembly striped out! I couldn't tighten the blade up. I had to take both saws apart to replace the tension assembly. I went to the Ryobi website to see about another assembly and the darn thing cost me a whopping $1.70! So I bought 2 of them! "$1.70" couldn't believe it. With shipping it cost $17. Dang shipping was almost $13. Don
