  • Etsy and state sales tax

I am trying to understand if I had a Etsy store, would I have to collect sales tax for the buyers state? I thought that was only if you had a business presence in their state, but the Etsy documentation wasn't very clear. It made it sound like you did have to collect sales tax.

I closed my Etsy account quite some time ago, so I can't answer that question.

You don’t have to to anything. Etsy automatically collects sales tax when the buyer makes a purchase.

But do they send the sales tax to the states, or do does the store owner?

If it is like Bay, they take care of the sending the tax to the states.

Like Denny said, Etsy collects the sales tax and distributes to the states. You don’t have to do anything other than pay for the postage and send out the product.

Little late to the party here, You are responsible to remit the collected tax from the state in which you are selling from.. Etsy handles all the other states. All the replies above make it sound as if etsy does it all.. which they do except the state in which you are selling from.
