  • USMC On Etsy

    Hello all,
One of my items was removed from ETSY yesterday. It was a pattern from Steve Goode with the Military letter. I used the "M" with the word MARINES. I never knew the USMC, Marines, the Eagle, Globe and Anchor are all Trademarked. It seems anything that states Marines is a trademark. I will now have to go the apply for the license or I think they are now working with ETSY to obtain a license. I have attached the letter from the USMC trademark office. I just thought you should know.

Now we know. They do not want us using their logo, So I'm pretty sure it is the same for the other branches as well.

I"m real careful with some of Steve's patterns. For the college ones I get stickers from that college and use them. Love Steve's patterns alot but can't sell them at most places. I did Marines one and gave it to my brother.

Thanks Mark. That's one I did not know. I sure hope the Marines can work things out with Etsy and make it easier for all of us.

Wow That's a bummer! What about all the sites that sell patterns for military using their logo's? Are those going to disappear too? There is even a whole book of military patterns available. Maybe they are licensed to sell but what is the point if you can't make and display them? I guess it's only a problem if you sell them.
Frankly I see their point. You don't want your good name appearing on pornography (from the letter attached in the original post) and you just have to have quality control on things bearing your image. But most of us who cut military patterns have a deep love and respect for the military and the sacrifices they make for us. I guess I won't cut them for sale anymore. I do respect copyrights of the pro and college sports franchises as well.

Is this something new? The plaques have been around for years sold in pattern books etc..

It sounds to me like the USMC wants to allow the use of their logo but want Etsy to provide some oversight to make sure it is used in good faith. I'd be willing to bet that the publishers of some of the patterns have already agreed with the USMC to provide oversight. I'm no expert but that's what I got from the letter.

You can go to the link I originally posted and all the info is there. I am in the process of getting my own license so that I can also sell on other sites and craft shows. You do have to send at least a picture of your work along with the license.
Hammer: I can only assume this is not new. I guess we just never knew.

Just curious - are they charging you for the liscence? I didn't see where there was a charge but I didn't read the whole site either. If not, then it's not bad. Just the time for them to make sure what you are making is appropriate.

                        Hi T,
The application does not ask for a fee when mailing. I will be mailing mine by the end of the week and it takes about 30 days for approval. Of course after you get the approval, they may ask for a fee, but as of now, I do not think there is one.

I wonder if that would be the same for Canada. I live in Toronto Ontario and i see lots of military works being sold. Something i should look in to.

                              Update on USMC Trademark

Hello all, I received an e-mail from the USMC trademark office today and my License was approved. There is a $25 fee per year for up $2500 in sales and $50 fee for up to $5000 in sales for the year. This license can be used for ETSY, E-Bay, craft shows and if you have your own website. I will receive a registration number and must put their disclaimer about the tradmark with all my listings.

Hi Linda - thanks for the comments on the welds. It took me an hour or so to get into the swing of MIG wire welding but I really like it in preference to stick welding especially for welding thinner material. I confess to investing in a new angle grinder to help with the cleanup and dressing. I bought...
