Shipping Intarsia

Hi, Everyone,

I have been doing intarsia for awhile and am finally beginning to get several orders, but I never seem to have a box that fits the project. I am wondering how does everyone else go about shipping their creations.

Do you make your own boxes? If so, Where do you get the cardboard.

I am tired of paying for over sized boxes, as it always seems that my projects won't fit in the standard size boxes.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Go to a furniture shipping company and buy the large boxes used for mirrors. Cut and make your own size from these. A former neighbor gave me some of their extras that measure about 3 feet square. Tape 'em up good and your all set!

You can also get mirror boxes at moving companies.

I've been in that perdicamint several times. Once, I fashioned 2 fedex boxes together, places like UPS store sell lots of sizes but it's usually cheaper to get a deep on that's wide enough and cut it down.

The last one I shipped, I built a crate for because it was a custom piece. 2x2's, lots of bubble wrap and cardboard. The most important think is enough padding so that if any of the corners/sides get bumped- it won't break.

One tip- get a fedex account then you can do labels on line and the rates are cheaper.

How about using cardboard sheets to make your own boxes? You can get them for free from places like kroger, Meijers and other grocery stores. We use them at work every day to put on top of a pallet to cover any nails that may protrude. They are 48x42, exact size of a pallet. Score the inside of the cardboard where you want to fold it into a box. I'd wrap the artwork in bubblewrap and then pack the box tight with newspaper or packing peanuts. Don't have any newspaper that touches an unwrapped object or you'll risk ink smearing on it.

Chances are, you see a stack of pallets someplace, you'll find cardboard slip sheets in there somewhere's...almost everyone uses them for the same thing.
