posting pics and copyright issues

I need some feedback on showing some of the pics I have. I made an intarsia fish that I seen on youtube and it is in a Picasaweb album. The artist must live overseas and had no patterns available but it was so neat looking I made my own. I am not reproducing this fish an not taking credit for its design so am I allowed to show it or am I getting into a copyright issue. I also seen a drawing of a great horned owl on shutterstock and made a pattern similar to the drawing and the owl turned out pretty good. There are thousands of images and pictures to choose from and I ask again is this a copyright issue if I show the pic . Once again I am not into reproducing any pattern or taking credit for the designs since I get bored easily making the same thing over. I have many fishing and hunting magazines and I plan on using some of the drawings and pictures to inspire myself into making more patterns in the future of wildlife. Where do the pattern makers get their inspiration from? I find it challenging to draw out a picture and try to make a pattern to put to use as an intarsia project.Hope i'm not opening up a can of worms so to speak.

I am not a lawyer. With that said making and displaying a piece from another person's pattern/design/plan is not a copyright violation. You can even sell the finished piece you made. What you can not do is to copy and sell the pattern to others. For that matter you can not even distribute free copies of that pattern without the designer written permission.

from my understanding - if you are making a profit from someone else's work (the original picture or pattern) they can sue you for copyright infringement. No selling of the finished product. No giving away the pattern.

Some options -
Get permission from original picture/designer to use their item
Use royalty free images as was suggested
Take your own photos to create designs from

You are okay to post pics of your completed projects and projects in progress on the forum, just do not post patterns you do not create yourself. Thanks for asking.

Post away! lets see those pics! doesn't sound like you have any issues with copyright. I am doing the exact same thing in the WIP section with my post "first intarsia pattern".
