My choices are only suggestions. Get a piece of white birch and test it. If it takes the stain well and is reasonably easy to cut, go for it.

Thanks Jan but I plan to stain rather than paint. What about white birch? I was reading that is stains well.

My choice, if I were to do it in segmentation, would be something easy to cut, shape and that takes paint well. I think it would be poplar or aspen, both of which are easily found at both Lowes and Home Depot. Pine can be difficult to cut.

    wood for segmentation

I am going to create JGR "elk" for my son-in-law. I plan to create it using "segmentation" technique, cutting it out of one piece of wood , 3/4" thick. I plan to stain with various shades. What wood species would you use for this project? Jim in Bend
