Empty Your Trash

Here is a useful and simple tip. Empty your trash can frequently. I was stacking just 2 1/8" boards today and I noticed after cutting around a small piece that the piece was barely hanging on. I then turned it over and to my dismay, I realized the piece from the bottom board had just been discarded with another piece that I had just tossed in the trash can. Of course, I hadn't emptied my trash from the last several projects so there were hundreds of small pieces in there. I searched for about 5 minutes and said the h--- with it. If I would empty more often I would have much less to go through when accidentally discarding a piece. My only hope now is to try and duplicate the missing piece later and glue it in and hope like heck it matches.

yeah, I've been fishing in the trash, on my knees searching the floor, probing under tools and cabinets with sticks..you name it, and that piece can disapeer forever. Not only that, but usually I can't be sure even what the piece is supposed to look like other that what kind of wood it was. What I do know is that there's alot of cobwebs and dust bunnies under some of my cabinets, along with several dead bodies (crickets). Good new though...no spiral blades have been found in my shop.

I was dooding some shaping on my drillpress sander with the vacuum runing to collect the dust.
The piece I was shaping slipped from my fingers.
I did find it, once I tore the shopvac bag apart!

You should empty the shopvac on a regular basis too.

Lost head

I was using my flutter sander in the drill press to smooth some large puzzle pieces. I put the horses head a little too deep in the stack and it launched. I still have not been able to find it. I think NASA should look into these things for getting small items into space.

Another thought

Maybe we should start a thread on all the different things sucked into a dust collector. Mine has the uncanny ability to suck up a good piece and leave the scrap behind.

yes, I've been there with the dust collector too. Now I have a window screen covering the opening, I wrapped it over the pipe and it's held on by a rubber band.
