I learned this from an elderly gentleman that used to be a wood finisher in a church furniture factory here in town. He used cheese cloth to apply and remove stain from the wood. He would then unfold the cheese cloth and hang it up to dry. When dry it was hard and crusty, it was just abrasive enough for rubbing down the wood he had just stained, it will not scratch the wood and works great for buffing the wood before you apply a finish.
