I am looking for a new scrollsaw. Locally I have 2 options 1 is a porter cable with stand 18 inch table the other is a central machine. Is either one any good. I have a craftsman now. It is over 20 years old. Thank you in advance

No direct experience with either but from what I have seen posted on various forums and Facebook the Porter Cable is the better of those two.

I learned a long time ago that the most expensive scroll saws are not necessaryly the best saw. I have used most all the saws out there and so far I like my Excalibur about the best but have found other used saws I've used I like almost as well.and are much cheeper. My favorit saw that I still use today broke down about a year ago. The "connecting rod bearing holder" broke and I found I could not get a new part so I went out and bought a cheep used 24 inch Delta that I have grown to like and use quite a bit. Before I fixed my Excalibur I also bought another used 19 inch Excalibur scroll saw. Since I could not find a new part for my busted Excalibur I tore it appart and fixed the broken part using Marine Tex Epoxy and reparied the broken part. It works great and just may out last a new part. I now have 3 good saws in my shop and they all work very good. The good thing about the Delta is that it was cheep, works good and does not have many moving parts that can brake down.

A couple of years ago this magazine did a scrollsaw article about various saws, comparing them. Porter Cable ranked well at the time, for that price point.

One other thing I would like to pass along here is to try and stay away from saws that viberate a lot. I once owned a Craftsman and by the end of a long day my hands & arms would be very tired and sore due to the viveration. They may be considered a good saw but by the end of the day you could be pretty sore. The good thing about the Delta I showed above is that t is a lot ;like a sewing machine, The viberation is mainly from the blade giong up and down.

Search for a used hegner. Parts are readily available and their service Dept is top notch. My first one was a craftsman and hubby bolted it to the workbench it was on. Then I switched to a bandsaw than my Hegner 21 years ago.

Ray at Seyco has the parts for the Excaliburs as long as it isn't one of the more recent Chinese clones.

Our Judges are some of the best woodworkers I have ever met. On occasion I get asked to explain what I look for in the scrolling categories. I point out all of the nuances. I can't be a judge as I have intarsia and scroll work entries.

There may have been some crud on the tips from manufacturing.
In the ~20 years of scrolling I never cleaned the ends of my blades until recently. Even with the Pegas clamps I was having some blade slippage, I now scuff the ends of my blades with some 220 grit paper End of problem.!...

Don’t over sand them as you will shorten their usable life. Only sand as needed. Another thing to do is clear your blades before installing. Blades are coated with oil to prevent rust. Wipe the ends with alcohol or lightly sand with 320 grit.

The fact that you only had approximately 6 hours on the saw tells me there was a thin oily film on the clamps from the manufacturing process.
If problem continues you may have spread the clamps in the process of tighten blades. A common problem with OEM parts. This issue will disappear by replacing...

It was on sale plus his military discount and a $50 gift certificate from his woodworking club. Bruce said to check out on Google 10” kolbalt mitre...
