  • Never seen anyone use a scroll saw in person.

Hi there scrollers. I have been scrolling for 3 1/2 years and I have never seen anyone use a scroll saw in person. I am self taught I just read all the books i could find. I have been volunteering at my local Junior High, teaching the kids what I know. It would be nice if I could see someone else use a scroll saw so I can see if I am doing this thing right. My work comes out beautiful but I would feel so much better if I could see someone else at work. I live in 29 Palms California, Southern California it's kind of near Palm Springs. I was wondering if there is anyone near me or as far as Las Vegas thet I could hook up with and see if I am doing this right. I At least want to know if I am teaching the right stuff.

An option for you would be to check the classified section of the scroll saw magazine and purchase an instructional video. You might even gets some good tips to share with your students. Good luck.
    Cheers

If youi have a Woodcraft store close by, they have classes in scrollsawing plus other classes.
I agree with the rest. Seeing an old hand at it is better. An Old elderly gentlemean got me started. he still scroll saws and he is 87. Has his RBI set up now where he sits and saws. Sometimes all day long.

Hey Kenny, Thats what I am talking about. Watching someone scroll and watching a video is much different. No we dan't have 1 of those stores out here in the Desert but I havefound a guy i Arizonia that gives classes. I am going to fly out there and learn everything I can.
Thanks you guys for your responces. I will let you know how the class turns out. Oh I won't be taking the class till maybe the first week in November.
          Thanks alot for listening.

            Mytoya,
I feel that if you are happy with your work, then you are doing someting right. If other people likes your work, then you are doing something right.
But understand if you want to watch and learn. I have been either doing fret work, woodworking and carving for many many years and never took a class but have asked oldtimers questions and have been shown techniques and try to use the best tips from everyone.
I am still learning. I use a RBI Hawk 220, No brag, just got tired of buying Craftman saws and at the time, really did not know any differenc. Then some older gentlemen friends bought different scroll saws and I was able to try them out. I will not put down any saw but settled of the RBI220. The price was right as it was a Demo RBI had used in demostrations. Had about 10 or so hours and several hundred dollars off their regular price. I did have to spend the weekend going to get it but was and easy drive from sEK and it got the little bride away for a while also.
I am happy as can be and now my Craftman is setting there weepy eyed as I don't use it much.

Keep on with what you are doing and this board and people are great to get tips from and are very helpful.

                Hi Mytoya,

John Nelson has a very good book to learn from. You can take it with you next to the saw. It is published by Fox Chapel sponsor of this site.
