    Re: POrtraits

I'm just a newbie, but I am pretty knowledgable in other areas. Computers is one of them and I love playing with Adobe Photoshop.
I found a way to take a photograph and apply some filters and settings that will give you a good black and white 'mock up' to start with. It's not perfect, but with a little hand drawing/correction, the pattern will look like those done by professional portrait scrollsawers.
email me if you'd like the exact steps to do this. There are too many to list here.

If you have any small silouette patterns look at how they are done. Then draw an outline of your portrait and using the example of the silouette darken (with a pencil) areas of the portrait that you want to cut out. If it doesn't look right, erase it and try again. For instance you may want to darken the hair (or parts of it), the irises of the eyes, the mouth, and area under the chin, etc... Tthe darkened areas would be cut out and replaced by the backing wood or material showing through the cut out area.

If that made any sense I'll be real surprised. Hope it does and is what you're looking for.
