I also have an older Hawk with the belt set-up, but mine is a 3 speed. Nope, do not use any kind of speed controller on it. You will damage the motor. Hawk does sell a new variable speed motor for it, but it's over $300. Eventually I am going to check with Grainger or places that carry electrical motors to price anything else compatable.

Speed controller for RBI Hawk 220-2
Hello all,
I just picked up an older RBI Hawk 220-2... it does not have a variable speed unit on it. Can I use a basic "router" type speed controller on this? I believe these have a DC motor so do I need a special type of controller?
This does have two speeds via the pulley under the machine but I am hoping to have a dial on top!
Thanks! I am new to it all.Tags: None

Reply to Miniature Birdhouse Ornamentsby RolfI also enjoy making these. I have also used the profiles to turn some on the lathe. I mostly use a 220 Mac mop I have a 180 for the harder woods and then finish with the 220. I do all sanding before assembly.03-22-2023, 07:08 AM

What grit do you use on the mac mop? Do you change grits for the final sanding? Do you mop sand with the bird attached?
Inquiring minds want to know.
