Drawing the inside of a collapsible basket

I'm putting together a pattern to cut a set of wedding bells for some friends that are getting married and I intend to make this into a collapsible basket. In general I use inkscape for my patterns. Is there any way to automatically make a spiral fit to a shape, or am I going to have to do it freehand?
