Segmentation for beginners

I was browsing thru the members galleries admiring everyones work and while looking at the segmentation gallery it hit me I'd like to give that a try, so....
what books or book do you segmentation scrollers recomend for a newbie like myself?

There are some really awsome pieces our members have produced in that gallery if ya'll haven't already done so check it out!

I'm not sure you need a book to have a go at segmentation - it's just a matter of cutting around the outlines on a suitable pattern, then rounding over the edges with either a router or abrasive paper. You can use pictures in childrens' coloring books as patterns.

That said, Pat Spielman wrote a good book on segmentation called Scroll Saw Segmentation (which I have and like) and Creative Scroll Saw Segmentation (which I don't have).

Bill--There are several good books out there on segmentation. A simple start with some smaller projects might be one of Frank Droge's books. The Angel fish and the mask in my gallery are from one of his. The best book on segmentation I have ever come across is called "Scroll Saw Art" by Patrick Spielman and Kerry Shirts. It has a picture of a Zebra on the cover. I think it is out of print, but I noticed that Sloan's Woodshop had it for sale not too long ago. Some of the patterns that both I and Neal Moore have done come from that book. It would be worthwhile trying toget a copy.

I agree with old mooner, that book will teach you heaps, and the projects go from simple, to extremely complicated. If I ever tried one of the tough ones in that book, I would lose 1/2 of the pieces in the sawdust pile on the floor! Its a great book.

Thanks for the info guys, I checked Sloans website and the book you suggested OM is still available,I'll be ordering it tomorrow.
I can't believe the number of books Mr. Spielman wrote or had a part of, did he ever have time to really make any sawdust?
