I am in the process of cutting Engine 86, a railroad steam engine pattern by Jeff Zaffino in the September 2005 Creative Woodworks & Crafts magazine. I am looking for ideas as what to use for a backer board and what to frame it with. I usually make my own frames. The pattern is 11 X 14, I am cutting it out of a 12 X 15 piece of Finnish Birch plywood. Thanks, Mick.

Something like that needs a black background hands down. You can use felt board or a piece of laun or baltic birch plywood painted black but it has to something with no grain. Or if you go to a craft store you will find two things and either works well. It is a foam board you can paint black (My choice) or heavy construction black paper but will need a piece of something behind it to give it support. Michels is a big craft store, as well as AC Moore, or Treasured Island. Good luck and want to see a photo when done.John T.

John T. Thanks for the ideas, probably will go with the luan painted black to give it more support. Will be awhile before I get it done, over 700 cuts. Took awhile just to drill all the holes. Most difficult one I have cut so far. Keeps me out of mischief though. Some rainy days coming up so will get more done if I can't golf. Mick.Mick, - Delta P-20

Reply to YoraHome Laser w/CNC Engraver/RouterNew toys sometimes become tools we can use, and other times they simply are tools toward expanding our horizons and being there when an idea pops into our heads. Let us know what you try the Ortur on and how it does. I'm sincerely curious. Also....why did you choose Amazon vs the other vendors...

Reply to First you need to make a messby will8989It was a challenge that’s for sure. I didn’t start anything until I was all finished. It’s nice to have a clean area to work in! My biggest challenge was all those pieces of scrap wood that I just might need “someday.” They burned well in my son’s woodstove. And I did get through all the patterns....

Reply to First you need to make a messby tgiro01Wow - Betty, what do you charge. I have things to do and I'm in the process of cleaning my shop, just to have room to do it. My problem is that I get the work bench cleared and then start working on projects again. I really need to do the workbench last.

Reply to YoraHome Laser w/CNC Engraver/Routerby tgiro01I ordered and received the ORTUR Laser Master 2 from Amazon, the but haven't had a chance to even get it out of the box. Too much going
on right now. I got the 20 watt version, which is supposed to be good for cutting, but I don't think I'll be doing much of that. There will be a learning curve...-
