  • Free Patterns

I am unable to download the free patterns from the SSW site. I had the same problem downloading a set of patterns I ordered from Berry Basket and they had to send the patterns in an enclosure. I will try to accurately describe my problem. I clicked on the free pattern link. I got a screen completely blank except for a red "x" in a small box in the upper left corner. I did a left click - and nothing. I did a right click and got a drop down menu, but none of the choices worked.

Is there some setting on my computer that I need to change?

First of all you need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you have that, and just clicking on the pattern does not work. Right click, then "Save Target As", and remember where you saved it. Open up Adobe Acrobat, then from that program, open up your file you downloaded.

      Tom:

If the picture, or file, is not an adobe .PDF file, try the following:
(It may not work, but it won't hurt)

It depends on your internet browser also. For example, if you are using Microsoft's Internet Explorer that comes free with Windows XP:
-- on the Menu Bar, look under Tools-->Internet Options
-- Across the top in the new window, look for the Advanced tab and left click to select
-- scroll down the list of options and look for option Show Pictures
-- verify the option is selected with a check mark, (click if it not selected)
-- verify the option Show Image Download placeholders is unchecked
      (uncheck if it is selected)
Any changes may require you to exit IE application and restart IE, and then re-download image.

Other browsers, other procedures are used.

With that done, I will now go into my standard Pitch:
      1. be sure you have downloaded, installed the free Lavasoft's Ad-Ware program to remove Ad-Ware (and run it manually often!!)
      2. Be sure your anti-virus is up to date, both virus definitions and anti-virus engine (application updates). (note: Ad-Ware, Spyware, are not considered viruses)
      3. If you use Microsoft products for your computer operating system OS, you should have recently visited the Microsoft.com site for Windows Update. If you haven't updated your Windows OS since Jan. 2005 DO IT SOON.

        Trouble Downloading

        Phil,

I did as you suggested. "show pictures" was already selected. I looked through the list three times and didn't see a "show image download". These are PDF files that I'm trying to get. I have Adobe Acrobat v.6, which is think is the most current version. In the past, with the same computer, I had no trouble downloading these PDF files. When I got them sent as an attachment, I had no problem opening them. One suggestion was to right click on the red X and click on Save Target Image (or something similar). That is not one of the options when I right click on the X.

I appreciate your trying to help me. If you have other suggestion I would appreciate them.

          Tom:

Sorry, I didn't correctly emphasize that the second I.E. advance option's keyword was "Placeholder". That option is just above or very near the first option I suggested you verify.

History: Way back in the days when 14.4 baud rate modems were the fastest available and forums like this were called Bulletin Boards, the red-X was called a "download image placeholder." (As in: use a placeholder for pictures and images unless I specifically select to download an image, which in 14.4 modem days was important time consideration.)

There are two additional places that could be halting your displaying .PDF files: IE browser Security and Folder Options-->File Type tab.

I will continue in Private Messages, but basically it becomes difficult to fault isolate in a media like this forum. A re-install of Adobe Acrobat may be needed.

Sorry Tom for the slow response I was on vacation for the last three days. It looks like GrayBeard Phil has you on the right track for correcting the problem. Thanks GrayBeard.

Another work around would be to right click on the pdf link and select "save target as". Select a location on your computer where you can find it. You should be able to doulbe click the image to open it from your hard drive. Let me know how you make outIf not you most likely need to reinstall AdDobe Acrobat Reader.

            Thanks,
            Rob
