Another Opinion, I have some Black Walnut, would that be a better choice for the Bear?

Sometimes the detailed cuttings get lost in heavy grain or dark woods. One of many reasons I don't like red oak.(grain).
Solid woods are also very fragile with fine cutting.unless you put them on a backer.

I can't say it is a better choice, but I have done a couple delicate pieces in black walnut and I liked the way they look. If it doesn't have a lot of wild grain in the piece I think it would be okay. You would have to us real care under the bear's chin on the neck. Some very fragile pieces there.

One I did in black walnut. It is about 3/8" thick.

Paul that really looks great and the grain does not take away from the detail.

Thanks, I love the pattern and plan to cut it again in some bark edge wood. The pattern is from SSW&C issue #60 on pages 48 and 49. It is a Theodore Buzzelli pattern.
