Fretwork baskets

Our club did a project that involved making baskets based on a Patrick Spielman design. They were rather large and I couldn't get into making them. So I decided to do a couple half scale. The wood is 1/8 thick.
One is Walnut and baltic birch ply, the other mahogany and oak.
They are 5-3/8 dia. and 1-1/2 inches tall. I stack cut three 2 mahogany and the baltic birch was actually my backer, I used it just for kicks.
#3 blade and took about an hour to make plus finishing.

I made some of those a few years ago and gave them to a few friends. They were fun to make.

Making them is a great excercise in following the line, they would be great practice for a novice scroller.
I used CA glue and finished them with Rustoleum Painters Choice semi gloss clear. I use it alot it dries fast and levels nicely.
If I were to make more I would build myself an alignment jig for the gluing.
It took me as long to assemble as it did to cut.

The mahogany ring was made from material that I resawed and planed down to 1/8. Unfortunately the wood had hairline fractures trought. Everyone of the rings was broken in at least 3 places. I had to glue them all back together before assembly(CA glue with acelerator)
