Pattern from Steve Good. I used 1/4 inch maple ply and then stained the top layer with water based walnut stain and the backing with water based golden maple. Finished with shellac.
I have my first turning project coming up where I'm considering using maple burl vs. buckeye burl. I'm going for neutral colors and I think the Maple would work well, but the dark bluish? colors I'm seeing on some of the buckeye burl on ebay look intriguing as well.
Here are 5 of the 70 pieces I cut for a spiritual retreat coming this September. They are cut from 1/8" baltic birch stacked 5 high using a #1 Pegas Modified Geometry blade. They will be dipped in a 50/50 mixture of shellac and denatured alcohol.
