  • Miniature Birdhouses

I finished four more Miniature Birdhouses. The patterns are by Diana Thompson and purchased from her website. I used Walnut and Yellowheart. The Walnut turned real dark with the application of 50% BLO. I used FD Ploar #5 and #7 blades. Comments welcome.

Very nicely done Denny. You are getting to be very very good at making these. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Thanks, DW. I need to find a way to keep the Walnut from turning to dark.

Have you tried a sanding sealer dip (shellac base)

Would that be Shellac diluted with denatured alcohol?

I have used Rust-Oleum Satin Clear Enamel. 2 coats .
My normal for everything is a bath in Watco natural and spray deft semi gloss.. found the bird house looked good with the enamel

I use it strait out of the can or for my ornaments do a 50/50 mix with alcohol. It will raise the grain, but a quick kiss with a mop it is fine.
That is what I do with my ornaments.

I have tried several times to access Diane Thompson's website and am unable to do so. Anyone else having this problem? Is there anywhere else I could obtain these patterns?

I saw on FaceBook that she and her husband have been ill and not able to keep up the website. I know mush of her patterns are available at Scroller Ltd.

I have been on the internet for the last hour. Unfortunately the link to Diane's website from Scroller LTD is no longer in place. However I found the following web locations that have designs very similar. They might even be those of Diane's but they do not say so.

                            http://www.thewinfieldcollection.com...craft-Patterns

                            http://www.scrolleronline.com/produc...ct-Pattern/350

                            http://www.scrolleronline.com/produc...ct-Pattern/286

These were also published in an earlier posting a year or so ago, so I am not taking credit for the discovery. Just want to share anew for those who might also be interested.

I have been making many ornaments for the last several years and then give them away. Each year I try to find some new designs (to me) and make each of my three grandchildren a special ornament from "grampy" signed and dated. I think these bird houses might be their gift this year.

Right now I am heading for Rockler in Pasadena, CA to pick up some of the walnut blocks they have advertised on sale.
