compound cutting: Think of making a chess piece. Draw one view of it on a block of wood. Then a side view on the side of that block of wood. Cut out the front side on the lines. Tape the pieces back together, cut on the lines on the side view and then remove the outside pieces of scrap. What is left in the center is the desired shape.

Paul if you want to learn about compound cutting on the scroll saw, then jump right in.
Jim's explanation is right on, and if you visit this link put out by Diana Thompson (the queen of compound cutting in my opinion) you will get a free pattern to try it out, along with a mini tutorial. Have fun. Scroll Saw Patterns by Diana Thompson at Scroll Saw Inspirations

Diana Thompson did a great job of explaining.
She is talking about the blade not cutting straight. Most blades have a burr on the right side, what makes the blade cut to the right. You have to move the wood some degree to the right to stay on the line. You no not need a blades with reverse teeth, The pieces what have fuzz on it are trow away pieces. Like she said, she is using a # 5 blade. She also sometimes uses a # 7. Both are Polar blades. When cutting the thick side, make sure you have good speed and push very, very slow into the blade, so that the blade will not bend and starting cutting with a bevel.
