2 of the new puzzle boxes

These are patterned after the new style puzzle boxes in the Summer 2012 SSW&C magazine. One is aromatic cedar and the other is mahogany. The Cedar one has a shellac finish and the Mahogany one has a beeswax paste finish.

Very nice job. Nice choice of finishes. I saw those on the cover and they have moved to the upper echelons of my cut list.

I found the article to be difficult to follow as far as the instructions for the cutting. Did you have any problems understanding them? You did a nice job on them. Perhaps i'll read it (the article) one more time.

It is fairly straight forward at least I found it to be so
Cut #1 is the one that separates the 2 sections
Cut #2 you cut either lid
Cut #3 cut the other lid
Cut #4 cut the bottom off
Cut #5 Cut the other bottom off
Cut #6 Cut the inside section out
Cut #7 Cut the other inside section out
I guess it is because I have made a ton of the other style of puzzle boxes that I find this one easy. Hope this helps a bit though.

WD I use a #2 reverse spiral blade gotten from Mikes. That seems at least for me to solve most of the issues with the blade wanting to bow when cutting real thick pieces. This makes cutting out the puzzle boxes, moose antlers and other compound cuts much easier. I warn you all it does take practice and using a clamp to hold the work when cutting is real helpful but it is doable and I think you might find it a useful skill to learn. Expect to make a piece of designer firewood or two in the process of making things and learning to control it.

Thanks!!! pretty much like a bandsaw box except you cut the lids off a little later as they have to be part of the puzzle...Thanks..

They came out great, Interesting that you used a spiral.
When I did the test cuts for the boxes my first one did not come out very well.
I had made some changes to my saw that affected how square my cuts were. I spent a fair amount of time tweaking my saw to get it right. I also realized that even after 7 -8 years of scrolling I still tended to push sideways a bit which really screws things up when cutting wood this thick. The spalted Mango is my favorite. It was a bit punky in spots but a little CA glue cured that.

Thanks for the spiral blade tip DW, I like using spirals on certain projects so I will give it a try on the puzzle box whenever the mailman is done with my magazine and decides to deliver it.
