Yes, it would be safe . I think the toxicity of almost all finishes is pretty much diminished once the finish is fully cured. I am not a finishing expert , but thats what I have been taught. dale

        LuckyScroller is right.

All finishes are child/food safe once they are fully cured, including PolyUrethane.

Lenght of cure will vary: it can be a week to a few months, depending on the finish. Read your labels and follow instructions carefully.

Shellac is also a good safe choice: Shellac is used in the food industry to coat pills and other edibles. It dries and cures quickly.

Walnut oil is another possibility, but (speculating) it could smell/taste good to certain kids (Hey how come another piece of the puzzle is missing?).

Don't pay extra for any product listed as food safe such as "butcher block" oil or "salad bowl" oil, use mineral oil instead (available at the pharmacy, and not to be confused with mineral spirits). Cooking oil is not recommended as it will become rancid.

        Regards,
        Marcel

Im anxious to see what you come up with. Recently I started drawing up a few plans as well, and helped a friend work out how to get a clock case designed to fit her ideas. Its a fun change to pick up a pencil, compass and straightedge once in a while. good luck on it, Im sure it will turn out great! dale
