  • New here, and new to scroll sawing

    Hello,
As the title implies, this is my first post here. I started scrolling quite recently. My husband (who does wood work building furniture etc) purchased a RYOBI saw to introduce our children to scroll sawing. So much for that plan, I tried it once and well......the kids are going to have to wait their turn! LOL
I enjoy scrolling immensely. The only part I find truly frustrating is finding the wood! My husband does all his own planing and gluing, and I have never taken the time to learn that aspect of wood working from him, consequently now I have to wait for him to find time to show me how to prepare my own wood. I tend to be a bit impatient as my time to scroll is fairly limited....and I want to do it NOW....not after the wood has set!
At any rate, I have read a few of the posts in here, and it seems like a great place to pick up some hints, and get to know some other scrollers. Nice to meet all of you

    Sarah
What's that old saying?? A bad day scrolling is still better than the best day working??

      Greetings and welcome Sarah,

I have access to the wood and the tools to get it to the size I need and I still get frustrated. Sometimes prepping the lumber takes longer than cutting the project.

However, you can find alternate sources. Old pallets and shipping crates can sometimes yield hidden treasures. Lots of folks use baltic birch plywood. It's available in many sizes & thicknesses, so there isn't much prep work involved, just apply your pattern and start cutting!

Also, don't let your husband throw away any of his cutoffs. If he's buildig furniture out of hardwoods like cherry, oak, maple, walnut, etc, you can use his scrap for scrolling. Lots better than burning or throwing them away.

Good luck and have fun making sawdust!!

Welcome to the wonderful world of scrolling Sarah. You'll find soon enough that you are capable of some pretty amazing things, even if you do scroll with a Ryobi. As far as obtaining wood, you might be better off going online and ordering it. Check out http://www.sloanswoodshop.com/. They normally ship within 24 hours and their shipping rates are very reasonable. This is just an option for an impatient person.

You are so right - scrolling is very addicting. Also, the members on this forum add to the addiction. They're a great bunch and can answer pretty much any question you may have. They have sure helped me out in the past. I just hope to be able to return the favor now and then.

Have fun and don't be a stranger. Also, be sure to show off your work. The worst you may get is constructive criticism but you'll also receive much encouragement.

          Welcome Sarah,

You should definitely enjoy your new hobby, and sharing a woodworking interest may even bring you closer to hubby, who knows?

Just don't expect to spend more time with him, you'll rather be scrolling.

If you have any questions, don't be shy to ask, even if they relate to scrollsawing.

People here are nice and polite, we like to rib each other in a respectful manner. Sharing knowledge and having fun doing it is the name of the game, so join in.

          Regards,
          Marcel

It's not an option for an impatient Canadian person though Mike - they don't ship to Canada. Grrrrr!

Welcome to the forum Sarah, and have fun with that scroll saw. Remember to make time for hubby though, they can get so annoying when they're being ignored.

                Thanks guys

Wow, you guys are fast.....one question though, shouldn't you all be scroll sawing?! Just joking. Thanks to all of you for the welcoming. I am hoping to put pictures of the first two projects I did. Go easy on me though. They are the same pattern, one done with cedar and one done with maple. Hubby is home now, so hopefully he will show me how to put the pics on here.

Welcome Sarah. You already know you found something that will take over your life, and getting wood to feed that addiction will come pretty easy for you as well I'm sure. Have your husband get you one nice piece, and make a nice project for him with that piece, I bet after that he will keep you supplied with wood. If that dont work, I can send you a couple links to scrollsaw ready hardwoods that will ship to Canada. That first project you made should be stashed away for safe keeping. I know... I didnt even see it yet and I'm telling you to hide it , but put it aside and in 6 months or a year, cut that same project again, then compare. I'm betting you will see a huge difference in quality, just from a little experience. and, like said already, dont be afraid to ask questions, every once in a while someone here wil give you the answer!! Hi Sarah

I think you'll find we're all working on projects which have reached a stage where we need paint to dry or oil to cure or sawblades to be delivered or any one of a thousand feeble excuses which will give us an opportunity to natter .

One of the things you'll soon come to appreciate about this forum is that it's more than a means of communicating - it's a means of communing. Scrolling can be a fairly solitary activity for some of us and it's great that we can all come here for a bit of company. It's also great to have you amongst us.

                        Welcome Sarah

Finding suitable wood is also the biggest problem I have in Sask, Sloan's Woodshop will not ship to Canada, however if you get down to Tennessee make sure you visit Sloan's, I did a couple of years ago and picked up a small supply of wood and other supplies.
